Solo saxophone recordings
As I mentioned in the previous post, last week I went into the studio in Ukarumpa and recorded a few pieces for solo alto saxophone. One is the two-movement work, "We Sing to Each Other," by Dana Wilson. Wilson was drawn to the saxophone's expressive, voice-like sound, and he hears this piece as two voices in a singing dialogue. It was a challenging piece for me to learn, but very rewarding. The live performance at the Classical Concert was great fun, and I'm glad that I have a clean studio recording to remember all the work I put into the solo.
While I was in the studio, I also recorded an etude I've been working on. It's called "Geschwind," and is from a book by Noah Getz called "Stratosphere." The etudes in the book are designed to help the player develop what is called the altissimo range: the high octave which is above where the saxophone more comfortably plays. It's been interesting working on extending my range, though there's much work to be done before anyone would want to hear me play in the altissimo register!
