Global Forum on Arts and Christian Faith

A couple of years ago, my friend Glenn Stallsmith and I were talking about how we would like to design a journal that focuses on issues of music, arts, and worship in Christianity all over the world. We wanted to feature case studies from around the world, ideas for the application of academic tools to real-world situations, and reviews of new, relevant resources. Authors would include experienced writers, researchers, and teachers, as well as local practitioners with something interesting to share. And all of the content would be freely available online.

We continued talking about this, and then another friend from the International Council of Ethnodoxologists said, "Guys, make this happen." I took on the role of Senior Editor of the journal, Glenn became the Reviews Editor, and we (with input from many other people) spent the next months designing the Global Forum on Arts and Christian Faith.


I'm pleased to announce that the Global Forum is now up and running, with a table of contents that is already quite exciting, and continues to grow. This year's volume, so far, includes content about Christianity and music from Côte d’Ivoire, West Africa; Pakistan; India; and Aboriginal Australia; as well as an article about the place of critique in the creation of new Christian songs.

How can you get involved in the Global Forum?
  • First, go to artsandchristianfaith.org and register as a Reader; you will be able to get email announcements whenever new content is published. Then, check out the great items already published. You can read them online, or download the PDFs to look at later. It's all free--no subscription fees for the readers, no publishing fees for the authors!
  • Next, tell other people, churches, and schools about the journal.
  • But how can this be free, since there are costs for server space, web maintenance, and the Open Journal Systems software that powers the site? Donations pay for the minimal costs to keep the Global Forum operating. If this publication is worth something to you, would you consider donating to make sure we can continue providing the service?
  • Submit content to be published! We are very eager for more articles and papers to be a part of the Global Forum. If you have experience in arts and Christianity, or if you know someone who does, I encourage you to write it and send it to the journal for consideration.

 Spring semester at GIAL has a slightly more relaxed pace for me than the fall. My teaching load includes a number of distance-based classes, individualized directed studies with students, and supervising master's students as they write their theses. I don't have daily classroom teaching and preparation. This gives me time to focus on other important tasks, such as research, writing, speaking, and school committees. This month I was honored to be invited to Simpson University, in Redding, California, to spend time with several classes. Over just a couple of days, I spoke to four different classes. The power of providing food: Researching the world's culinary arts

Photo by Lou Stejskal This semester I’ve been working with our first World Arts student who’s writing a master’s thesis. Previous graduates have opted for the comprehensive exam option. Increasing the department’s capacity to mentor students through thesis writing is one of the reasons I was brought onto the faculty a couple of years ago. The faculty at that time were overloaded with teaching and administrative duties and couldn’t have taken on thesis supervision. This thesis is the first of four that I am currently working with, covering a range of fascinating topics and innovative, practical research. What is a World Arts thesis about? Meeting the Prime Minister

Yesterday was (going to be) an exciting day. Peter O'Neill, Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, was visiting the Eastern Highlands Province, and as part of his visit he was planning to stop at our airstrip! All of us in the directorate planned to go out and meet him. We went to the airstrip at 8 a.m. to await the Prime Minister's arrival. By 10 a.m., he had not left Port Moresby yet. And by noon, he had decided not to stop at our airstrip after all.
